Interior’s Ken “Boot on the Throat” Salazar stepping down #rsrh

http://www.cnn.com/2013/01/16/politics/salazar-resigning/index.html

President Obama’s big-hat-no-cows Interior Secretary will be stepping down. I found his attitude during his four years as the cabinet secretary most responsible for energy regulation to be arrogant and belligerent to energy interests.

Salazar came in to office with an agenda focused on so-called green energy. The focus of the (then) Minerals Management Service was on leasing the Outer Continental Shelf for wind energy, and the resumes of the MMS political appointees reflected that. But Salazar will be remembered for overseeing the regulatory response to the Deepwater Horizon disaster of April, 2010. By the end of May of that year, Ken had dismissed Liz Birnbaum and installed Michael Bromwich, a former prosecutor, as the agency’s head. Salazar’s “boot on the throat” approach to crisis management slopped over into regulation and continues to this day.

Mr. Salazar will not be missed.

Endangered Species a Victim of Brazilian Deforestation: Could Global Warming be to Blame?

Once plentiful to the point of being considered a nuisance, sightings of Pthirus pubis in its natural habitat are said to be fewer in number than at any time in recorded history. As reported in The Guardian (UK), scientists report that the rate of encounters of Pthirus in the bush to be down by as much as 90% over the last few years.

Website after website (comprising 25% of Internet traffic according to some experts) chronicles the critical loss of its natural habitat. Few deny that the deforestation is widespread, but experts disagree as to the underlying cause. Some say it is due to the overly-aggressive application of petroleum-based chemicals and waxes designed to limit unwanted growth in the delta region. Others speculate about the indirect effects of Global Warming, causing more frequent denuding of the nether regions which Pthirus calls home.

Surely we can all agree that every species deserves to be saved, regardless the cost to our prosperity and sanity. After all, our lack of regard for common sense is the ultimate measure of our humanity.

Are pubic lice in danger of extinction?

Some doctors have suggested that modern pubic-hair grooming practices, such as the Brazilian wax, are destroying the natural habitat of Pthirus pubis

AAPL Responds to ‘Promised Land’

The AAPL is the American Association of Professional Landmen. I appreciate their desire for a measured and considered response, but they’d better hurry up. The movie is likely to be out of the theaters and available on DVD before AAPL clarifies their position.

AAPL response to the movie “Promised Land”

AAPL, 1/11/2013

We have been discussing the movie “Promised Land” since early December 2012 and the corrective actions that we at AAPL may wish to take in regard thereto.  Recently, we have received some inquiries  from our membership asking what AAPL is doing in response to the movie “Promised Land” which was released to a large number of theaters on Friday, January 4, 2013.  As most of you know, this movie depicts both landmen and the oil and gas industry as being unscrupulous, having a lack of morals, and with little to no regard for the environment.  As you may be aware, Hollywood film star Matt Damon plays the lead role as the landman.

In responding to this film that contains numerous factual errors, AAPL does not want to over reach or react too quickly so as to give the film more credence than it may already have.  Obviously, it is important that we always maintain professionalism and conduct ourselves in a manner worthy to be called landmen.

At AAPL, our Code of Ethics and Standards of Practices behoove us to get the truth out about our profession and the industry.  Therefore we are taking the following actions:

  1. We are joining with the Independent Petroleum Association of America (IPAA) in its Energy in Depth program ( www.energyindepth.com) which is a resource for the general public to understand the oil and gas industry and its professionals. We have been asked to contribute information on landmen, how we do business, the leasing process and to portray exactly what happens during this phase of the oil and gas industry.  A lot of this information is already available on our own public website ( www.americaslandman.com).  The AAPL will be a very important contributor and a sponsor to the Energy in Depth initiative.
  2. Further, we have asked our marketing firm, Pierpont, to develop ideas for a campaign to address this issue specifically for the AAPL across the country and especially in the major oil and gas producing areas. We will consider our options and then your Executive Committee will make a recommendation to the AAPL Board of Directors as to the manner in which to proceed.

We think it is important to understand in the world of marketing and publicity, speed is not always the best approach. Conversely, a measured response with factual information and a prudent message is much more important and that is what the AAPL plans to do.

Please know that the AAPL is on guard and watch and we will address this issue in the most appropriate and tangible way. We appreciate your concern and your interest. As we finalize our plans we will provide more data and information to you at a later date.

Sincerely,

Jim Dewbre

Women on bikes ‘contrary to socialist morals’, banned in N. Korea. #rsrh

Finally some common sense from the socialist paradise that is the DPRK. (That’s sarcasm, BTW.)

http://www.dailynk.com/english/read.php?cataId=nk01500&num=10231

“…“Before the ban was lifted last year, if a woman was caught riding a bicycle she was fined just a bit of money, no more than 5,000 won. But now they are confiscating the bicycle instead, and this has been causing a bit of upset.” …

“Women used to ride early in the morning to avoid getting caught,” the source recalled. “During the squid fishing season, women from fishing towns even use bicycles to carry the catch to inland regions.”

“It is said that Kim Jong Il initially banned the use of bicycles in the 1990s after the daughter of a high-ranking official was killed in a traffic incident in Pyongyang. The North Korean state media subsequently justified it by saying that the image of a woman riding a bicycle runs contrary to socialist morals.”

Fact Checking Matt Damon’s ‘Promised Land’

I wasted $7.75 on Hollywood’s latest anti-fracking agitprop “Promised Land” (1) so you won’t have to.

You can read movie reviews elsewhere. From what I’ve seen, they’ve been rather lukewarm. And in its first weekend of nationwide distribution, audience response was tepid at best. In the words of lead actor/screenwriter Matt Damon, “Who ****ing wants to go see an anti-fracking movie?

Not only is the subject matter right in my wheelhouse, Damon et al bring the lies and distortion right into my backyard. Quite literally.

Oh, and did I mention that the film was partly funded by a state-owned media company in the United Arab Emirates?

Let the fact checking begin.

Plot spoilers follow. I promise. Continue reading

Gallery of Steve Maleys

My name is not all that common. But quite a few Steve Maleys show up on Google Images. Some of them are Stevens, like me, while others spell their first name “Stephen”. One of them is Steve Mealey. Some are from the U.S., at least one from the U.K. and one from New Zealand.

Climate Change, Climate Skeptics and Climate Fools

Under the title “An Antidote for Climate Contrarianism” at the New York Times Green Blog, Justin Gillis reviews an updated primer on the subject by MIT climate scientist Kerry Emanuel, focusing on the book’s value in clarifying the climate change argument. But under eleven grafs of organic compost Gillis buries his discomfiting lede: Emanuel believes that unless we’re willing to get serious about nuclear energy, it’s all just talk. Continue reading

Deepwater Horizon Owner In $1.4 B Settlement Over BP Oil Spill – NYT #rsrh

Oil Rig’s Owner Will Settle Gulf Spill Case for $1.4 Billion

By JOHN SCHWARTZ

“While this settlement resolves the government’s claims against Transocean, that company and the others involved in the spill still face the sprawling, multistate civil case, which is scheduled to begin in February in New Orleans. In a deal filed in federal court in New Orleans, a subsidiary, Transocean Deepwater, agreed to one criminal misdemeanor violation of the Clean Water Act and will pay a fine of $100 million. Over the next five years, the company will pay civil penalties of $1 billion, the largest ever under the act.

“As part of the criminal settlement, Transocean also agreed to pay the National Academy of Sciences and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation $150 million each. Those funds will be applied to oil spill prevention and response in the Gulf of Mexico and natural resource restoration projects. The agreement will be subject to public comment and court approval. The company agreed to five years of monitoring of its drilling practices and improved safety measures.

“In a statement, Transocean Ltd., the Switzerland-based parent of the rig owner, said that the company thought these were “important agreements” and called them a “positive step forward” that were “in the best interest of its shareholders and employees.” Of the 11 men killed on the rig, the company said, “their families continue to be in the thoughts and prayers of all of us at Transocean.”

Thank You Very Much: Cochon ‘Elvis’ King Cake features peanut butter, bananas & bacon. #rsrh

“The king behind Cochon Butcher’s king cake isn’t the one we usually associate with the Mardi Gras pastry.

“This one’s a little more rock ’n’ roll.

“For Mardi Gras, the restaurant at 930 Tchoupitoulas St., New Orleans, will serve an Elvis king cake, filled with peanut butter and bananas and topped with toasted marshmallows and bacon.”
