In order to encourage the use for ethanol as a replacement for fossil fuels, Congress passed the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) in 2005. The RFS mandates annual volumes of ethanol that are required to be blended into the nation’s gasoline supply. Those volumes increase annually through 2022.

In my opinion, ethanol should not have the privilege of all the perks of association that the designation ‘renewable’ psychologically bestows. ‘Renewable’ should be used exclusively for energy sources that, in their raw form, do not require an energy input before an output can be harvested.
Ethanol represents a lateral move in the energy industry, being that it can be used with the same engine designs and operations, and therefor does nothing to move our energy into a new paradigm of progress and innovation. Ethanol is the methadone of our culture’s energy addiction. A treatment, a tease, but not a cure. We need more posts like yours, and surveys (scientific or not~wink) to keep this conversation alive!
Most refocus law. Millions of dollars in subsidies for a fuel that costs more to produce than it’s sold for. Costs tax payers more millions to repair engines damaged by it. Oh, and lowers fuel economy. Brilliant
I agree that ethonal in the fuel destroys engines gets less MPG; I(t keeps mwchanics bust cleaning carbs. Bill Peiffer

corn is for cows, just drive past a feed lot -sniff the air and realize that same foul garbage is in your gasoline. Car lover here – so keep your animal feed in the feed lots.
