Calling the results "extremely surprising," researchers from the University of California, Santa Barbara and Texas A&M University report that methane gas concentrations in the Gulf of Mexico have returned to near normal levels only months after a massive release occurred following the Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion.
Findings from the recent research study, led by oceanographers John Kessler of Texas A&M and David Valentine of UC Santa Barbara, were published today in Science Xpress in advance of their publication in the journal Science. The findings show the removal of more than 200,000 tons of dissolved methane through the action of bacteria blooms that completely consumed the immense gas plumes the team had identified in mid-June 2010. At that time, the team reported finding methane gas in amounts 100,000 times above normal levels. But, about 120 days after the initial spill, they could find only normal concentrations of methane and clear evidence of complete methane respiration.
"What we observed in June was a horizon of deep water laden with methane and other hydrocarbon gases," Valentine said. "When we returned in September and October and tracked these waters, we found the gases were gone. In their place were residual methane-eating bacteria, and a 1 million ton deficit in dissolved oxygen that we attribute to respiration of methane by these bacteria."

Last June, Bulgaria granted U.S. oil company Chevron a permit to explore for shale gas in the northeastern part of the country. The potential reserves of shale gas in this area — the country’s main grain producing region — are estimated at up to 1 trillion cubic meters.
Bulgaria, which is almost totally dependent on Russian gas supplies, has long pushed for a way to diversify its energy sources, including shale gas. It has said Chevron would prepare a five-year project worth [?] million ($72 million) and invest [?] million ($5.8 million) on environment protection.
Because the last time Bulgaria depended on the Russians it worked out so well…

Kim Jong Eun will be keeping an even more watchful eye on half-brother Kim Jong Nam after the latter told a Japanese newspaper that the dynastic system in North Korea is “not right”, according to a Blue House security official. There are even fears for the life of Kim Jong Il’s eldest son in diplomatic circles now that his father is gone.
In a bold attack on the country’s political system and new leader, Kim Jong Nam made the comments in an email published by Tokyo Shimbun on January 3rd, claiming, “Nobody in their right mind would find it easy to accept the 3rd generation succession,” before adding, “Doubts linger over whether 37 years of absolute power can be carried forward by a young leader after just two years of training.”
Kim had previously revealed his misgivings at the course of the North Korean leadership in an interview with the same newspaper last January, when he highlighted the point that even Maoist China didn’t attempt a hereditary succession.
My advice? Don’t go fishing, Nam.
Max Bialystock and Leo Bloom were pikers compared to the Government’s “Green Energy” schemes.
Bialystock and Bloom plotted to make millions with a guaranteed Broadway flop. Against all odds, Springtime for Hitler became a runaway hit, and The Producers went to jail.
But at least Mssrs. Bialystock and Bloom produced something of value – a hit musical.
Our Green Initiative produces flop after flop, but precious little energy. Instead of throwing the perpetrators in the hoosegow, we keep reelecting them.

The decisions will not surprise North Korea watchers, who had expected Kim Jong Il to be embalmed and put on display in Keumsusan Memorial Palace, where the body of Kim Il Sung is also maintained with the help of Russian experts. It was also widely seen as only a matter of time before a prominent public statue was erected.
Harsh Punishment for Poor Mourning
The North Korean authorities have completed the criticism sessions which began after the mourning period for Kim Jong Il and begun to punish those who transgressed during the highly orchestrated mourning events.
Daily NK learned from a source from North Hamkyung Province on January 10th, “The authorities are handing down at least six months in a labor-training camp to anybody who didn’t participate in the organized gatherings during the mourning period, or who did participate but didn’t cry and didn’t seem genuine.”
