The Most Ludicrous Graph of the Month

Obama’s energy policies are a key vulnerability in the November elections, which has his staff scrambling to make it look like he’s actually done something to support domestic energy production. Since neither he nor anyone in his Administration knows the first thing about oil and gas, that can lead to some pretty ridiculous claims.

Like, for example, the following graph, found at Obama For America‘s website.  (The small arrow reads “Obama Takes Office”. Click on the graph to see a larger size.).

At the end of this post you will find a FIFY (“Fixed It For You”) graph which identifies several other events of significance equal to or greater than that of Obama’s inauguration.

Obama’s All-of-the-Above Energy Strategy is Evolving, Too. #rsrh

As seen on www.wattsupwiththat.com, “Clean Coal” is a late entrant in President Obama’s so-called All-of-the-Above energy strategy. He’s not seriously interested in promoting coal as an energy source, despite the fact that it currently provides most of our electricity. And late-game entrant “Clean Coal”, as WUWT points out, may as well be labeled “Unicorn Farts” – it doesn’t exist.

The only thing you can learn from the President’s All-of-the-Above strategy is that the name must really work well in focus groups – otherwise, why would they steal it from the Republicans?

Kim Jong-Un: Pyongyang amusement park “like, totally sucks.” #rsrh

I feel a little guilty having fun with this article, knowing that several dozen disgraced workers of Mangyongdae Funfair are looking at internment of several years over their failure to keep an insufficiently “serious” amusement park. Besides, I thought half-brother Kim Jong-Nam was the First Family’s amusement park expert.

North Korea Leader Rebukes Amusement Park Workers

North Korea’s leader Kim Jong-Un has scolded staff for neglecting their duties and failing to serve the people during a tour of an amusement park in a Pyongyang suburb, state media said Wednesday.

It is rare for the all-powerful leader to inspect entertainment facilities rather than military units, plants, farms or construction sites.

An analyst said it was also unusual for a leader publicly to find fault during such a tour, adding the move was intended to “spook” government officials and tighten his grip on the elite. …

Kim fumed over poorly maintained pavements, with weeds growing in between broken blocks, amusement facilities with scraped-off paint and the faulty arrangement of bases for trees.

“Seeing the weeds grown in between pavement blocks in the compound of the funfair, he, with an irritated look, plucked them up one by one,” KCNA said. …

“This is not just a business issue but an issue concerning ideological viewpoint,” it quoted the leader as saying in a “serious” tone.

“Officials should draw a serious lesson from the tour of Mangyongdae Funfair,” he said.

{It would be totally wrong to have a little fun with this story below the fold, wouldn’t it? – Ed.} Continue reading

Tax Code Tweak Might Make CNG for Vehicles More Available

Rep. William Cassidy (R-LA) common-sense approach to increasing the role of natural gas as a vehicle fuel, without the grandiose involvement of the Federal government. Unlike the Pickens Plan, this plan does not rely on massive government subsidies or direct payments for vehicle conversion. Instead, it would change the definition of “independent producer” in the tax code, to get around their current prohibition from making retail sales exceeding $5 million per year.

Full text at www.thehayride.com. Originally published in the Shreveport Times.

The recent natural gas boom in the United States has been so wide-spread and profound that it has dropped natural gas prices to historical lows. These prices are so low that producers have begun to scale back operations as extraction has almost become uneconomical. We should be focused on exploring new commercial markets for natural gas to take advantage of such a low-cost energy source. Because technology and supply is currently available to sell the natural gas equivalent for about $1.50 a gallon compared with the current price of gasoline, it would seem natural for consumers to begin making the switch to compressed natural gas CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) vehicles. Post-Mortem for the Ethanol Tax Credit

A couple of weeks back, my boss asked a question that I could not immediately answer:

The ethanol tax credit expired on December 31. The price of ethanol should have gone up afterward. Did it? How much has that affected the price of gasoline?

I turned to my friends at the American Petroleum Institute for help. Their surprising answer, in part:

API declined to answer whether the expiration of the credit has affected gas prices.

A little research helped make sense of this counter-intuitive set of facts, and sheds light on the efficacy of the government’s forays into the marketplace. Continue reading

Fmr Rep Wm Jefferson (D-LA) heads to prison. Longest Cong. sentence ever. #rsrh

Update.
The case is most infamous for the $90,000 FBI agents found in the freezer of his Washington D.C. home by FBI agents during a search conducted in August, 2005, several weeks before Hurricane Katrina. The money was most of the $100,000 in cash that a government informant had handed him — as FBI agents videotaped the transfer — money that the agency believed was going to given to then vice president of Nigeria as a bribe. The money never got to the Nigerian VP, and the jury ultimately cleared him on a charge of violating the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.

Study: Wind farms can cause climate change. #rsrh

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/earth/earthnews/9234715/Wind-farms-can-cause-climate-change-finds-new-study.html

Perhaps this should not surprise us, as one of the first lessons I remember is that nothing is free.

I also remember from my youthful reading of the Guinness Book of Records that a single large-scale tidal power generating plant I France causes a measurable slowdown of Earth’s rotation. Now that’s something to consider.
