Scientists Solve the Paradox of Why Oceans Exude So Much Methane – NYT Green Blog

“The discovery goes a long way to providing the missing piece of the ocean methane puzzle. “Yes we’ve solved an interesting little mystery,” Dr. Metcalf said. “But I think it’s much more than that.”

“While 4 percent of the world’s methane “doesn’t sound like a lot,” he said, methane is 20 times as potent as carbon dioxide as a greenhouse gas. Understanding the sources of methane and where it is stored is therefore critical in accurately assessing climate changes, he explained.

“Dr. Metcalf pointed out that some scientists have advocated fertilizing the ocean to stimulate the growth of algae that would absorb carbon dioxide. But it’s “really essential to fully understand the system before you even think about manipulating it,” he said.”

Well, no kidding. We’re still discovering mechanisms that affect things like atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases. Before we undertake measures designed to tweak these systems to our supposed benefit, we’d sure as hell better know exactly what we’re doing.

Nutria cleanup nasty, slow going

“Hancock County EMA officials estimate more than 15,000 nutria — large semiaquatic rodents — that were killed by Isaac’s storm surge have washed up on the beach.

" ‘We don’t want anybody out here in the stuff,’ said Hancock County Supervisor David Yarborough. ‘They’re actually starting to swell up and bust. It smells really bad. So, any sightseers, you might want to second guess this one before you come out.’ "

Yeah, that’s bound to change the whole ambiance of the beach over there…

Romney:Black & White TV::Obama:Moving Pictures #rsrh

“The Obama campaign theme emblazoned on banners at events is “Forward,” symbolizing the president’s repeated criticisms that Romney’s plans will take the country “backwards.” But the president newly riffed on this Saturday when he said of the Republican convention, “What they offered over those three days was more often than not an agenda that was better suited for the last century. It was a rerun. We’d seen it before. You might as well have watched it on a black-and-white TV.””

Which is odd, considering the President and his acolytes have pissed away trillions of dollars based on the discredited economic theories of John Maynard Keynes (1883-1946). We should be watching newsreels.

Cue the Fat Lady

During my company’s eight-year run as an operator in the Gulf of Mexico, we found and produced about one day’s worth of U.S. natural gas consumption and a few hours worth of oil production. That may not sound like much, but the economic activity of independent oil and gas companies sustains much of the Gulf Coast region and provides thousands of jobs.

All that is over. We’re plugging our last properties and leaving for good. Ava shalom. Continue reading

U.S: 78% of GoM oil production shut by storm #rsrh

U.S: 78 pct. of Gulf oil production shut by storm

“The U.S. government says 78 percent of the oil production in the Gulf of Mexico has been halted in preparation for Tropical Storm Isaac.

“The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement reports about 1 million barrels per day of oil production has been stopped as companies have evacuated 346 offshore oil and gas production platforms. That’s 17 percent of daily U.S. oil production and 6 percent of consumption.”

That total does not include shut-in production under state jurisdiction.
